How to increase download speeds when using YAMS

Hello! First, I just want to say this setup has been a godsend! This is all new to me and i've been scratching my head trying to get this all set up when I happened upon YAMS and it all just magically works now So thank you very much for the work that has been put into this project!

My System:

• Unraid (16.12.10)
• NordVPN
• Followed the YAMS install guide and used all recommended settings
• qBittorrent 5.0.3

I've noticed that my downloads are 10x faster on my personal PC (Win11, qBittorrent 5.0.3, NordVPN windows client, same network as my Unraid) compared to my new YAMS install. On my server the same magnet link will have an ETA of 4 days where my PC will do it in an hour. I've done my best to match qBit settings, but that didnt have any effect.

I assume maybe its because I need to manually select a better VPN server for YAMS, but I have no clue how to do that

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey @noob!

You might be having problems with your VPN throttling downloads. Also, OpenVPN (the protocol YAMS uses by default) is slower than a non-VPN connection. We recommend using ProtonVPN with port forwarding enabled and change from OpenVPN to Wireguard for maximum speed.

I gave ProtonVPN a try, and my download speeds have actually gotten worse in YAMS.

For comparison I tried out the binhex-qbittorrentvpn docker on Unraid with the same ProtonVPN credentials and got fantastic download speeds. I used the Ubuntu iso torrent as the test file for both. Both had port forward enabled (and verified), and both set to use wireguard.

I apologize for my naivety, but im just not sure why there is such a dramatic difference in speed.

Any recommendations on how to troubleshoot this?

That is very weird

Maybe change your VPN client? You can install Deluge instead of qBittorrent
